MÓBILES

There are something more between hell and sky. Yes I am talking about Móbiles from Curitiba that loves makes dirty pop music. We played on Último Volume a few months ago Dog On Wheels with the same kind of noise and I told to my partner on UV Marco Stecz that how Curitiba has a band like Dog On Wheels and nobody know them? Well, for my surprise Lucas Borba by Dog On Wheels are one of members of Móbiles and I am very happy these guys are playing together. The Móbiles music are fragments of Sonic Youth, Pelvs (from Rio de Janeiro), 80's noise bands and so much álchool. Lucas congratulation for your noise dirty poetry mostly the song "Carla is Really Dying" you wrote and recorded on Dogs On Wheels.

GOOD MORNING KISS

Vincent Ash (Guit), Duda Couto (Voice, Guit), Pedro Porto (Bass) and Alexandre Nunes (Drums) are Good Morning Kiss. The band is Porto Alegre based but they could be from Manchester, New York City or Dublin because it sounds different than brazilian pop rock sounds. When I listen on the first time thought a kind of Sebadoh or Folk Implosion fragments but listening it carefully there are more than Lou Barlow influence. There are a punch precision of american bands from the 90's plus a selfband style that results in excellent and exciting songs.

ORKESTRA MECÂNICA

Igor Ribeiro is a guy that combine creativity and sensibility while go into the soul deep with harmonies, depression and poetry tunes. He played on Tods, Iris, Ess and other jams friends but now he bets all his experience on Orkestra Mecânica. Finaly now he can do exactly what he wants. The songs comes from of another side of the life and sometimes seems his tunes is made for himself because in Curitiba nobody understand what he is doing. Don't worry about Igor, I know exactly you thinks!

BLUE AFTERNOON

Blue Afternoon was born of the will of Guilherme Barrella to write sad songs in the style of some of his great idols, such as Tim Hardin, Leonard Cohen, Lambchop and Tindersticks, but it took some time to find the ideal partners to take the project ahead. Guilherme started to transform his ideas into songs, with a leading acoustic guitar and instruments as harmonica and cello following his melancholic voice.
Some years later, Blue Afternoon recorded Folxploitation, with the arrangements that Guilherme always imagined for his songs. In tuning with bands as Black Heart Procession and Smog, the sound of Blue Afternoon is simple and elaborated at the same time. Calm songs, where silence matters as much as each sound, fragile melodies, serious and moved vocals, delicate and intense arrangements, desolate and poetical lyrics, a sad mood and equal doses of folk, avant-rock, soul and country make of Blue Afternoon an unique band.
In late 2004, Blue Afternoon released Radio Sessions, an album comprised of two separate radio sessions, one acoustic and one electric. Guilherme is now recording his new album Countrypolitan, to be released in summer 2006.
Guilherme is also a member of the bands Vurla, Open Field, Maison, Ocean Pacific and occasionally plays with Open Field Church, Prelinger Archives and Tony da Gatorra. He runs the Peligro mailorder and the Open Field record label.

MONOKINI

The 60s have been essential for nowadays´ pop music. It brought concepts and postures, along with styles and proposals that found each other odd and kept certain distance between them, despite the delicious and almost dismissible quality they had. In Brazil, the bossa crew could not stand the jovem guarda rebels, which thought that the bossa guys were too put. The geniality of Monokini is to join these styles and to find their own identity in the middle of that, with keyboards that recall the easy listening of Sergio Mendes and the elegant pop of Burt Bacharach. Guitars and basses find the balance between the pop of the Beatles, the irresistible moves of the Jovem Guarda and the electric bossa of Roberto Menescal. Drums and percussion in the exact key between music and rhythm; candy vocals, almost childish, recall Astrud Gilbert and Françoise Hardy; and yet a mood of Phil Spector and girl groups as Ronettes. The lyrics are naive and innocent, remembering the time where the important things were the good things of the life as the blue sea, the girl of Ipanema and the boy of Sampa. They had participated of compilations around the world and Mondo Topless, their debut, is one of the most appraised independent records in Brazil.

AUTOBAHN

I got an e-mail by my friend Fabiane telling me about AUTOBAN. Big surprise for me when I saw in the band line up my old friend Luciano Franco on guitar. Luciano played in excelent band in the 90's named LOVELESS that is a kind of Galaxie 500 from Curitiba. More later he played in a cover project called PLAYBACK SINGERS, a name band taken of one of Damon & Naomi album. Currently Luciano was (or is) playing in another electropop band ESS. But he is never satisfied because now he joined to a weird indie pop band AUTOBAHN line up by friends from Curitiba and the impossible to believe....they sing in germany(!). It is my first time that i see something like that in Brazil but let the things happen. AUTOBAHN maybe disagree your ears but the indie and hypes from alternative scene will love. Soon they are on Ultimo Volume airplay radio. I forgot to tell: I love them too.

ONE MAN BARBECUE

I knew Norberto Pie in the 90's when he was playing in a set show in Curitiba with my fauvorite band in that time named VORVOLAKA PRAY. I introduce myself to him and said "I want be your friend, Norberto". Since then we have been friends although nowadays is so difficult to meet each other. Norberto Pie is an open minded rocker and it is interesting he is all the time creating new bands as Vorvolaka pray (1989-1990), Sour Puss (A.C. Temple album name, 1990-1991), Skijktl (1991-2005), Fucke (1994-2005), AAAAAA Malencarada (1996-2002), Carlos (2002), Aos Cacos (Globo da Morte, 2003-2004), Live Transmission (2002-2006), Vasodilatadores (2006) and currently One Man Barbecue. MAGIC CRAYON

Contemplation, fun, laziness, affection, intensity. It is such as discovering something beautiful and/or vital in things that move you. It is trying to suck the marrow of life, whatever it may be. To colour feelings, sometimes colour, sometimes only black and white. Power indie pop! Easy poetry. Simple songs. Foolish Sincerity. Fake (?) existentialism. Disguised melancholy. Infantile joy. Pleasure. Currently the guitar, voice and magic head man of Cesar Zanin lives in Padoa, Italy with his family but the Magic Crayon still is going virtually making fun, noises and feedbacks between them on-line. COSMORAMA

Based in São Paulo, Cosmorama bet in a kind of music for open minded people who loves experimental noise and jazzy feelings giving us a music that bring emotion, creativity and lots of mosaic songs constructions. As overseas bands like Stars Of Lid or Storm And Stress or brazilian projects like Indios Eletronicos and Labirinto, Cosmorama is building their carrer step by step because the experimental pop style runs on a marginal bridge between indie and avang garde into the alternative music world. ZUCCHINIES

Zucchinies came from the middle of chaos and turbulence of the agitated city of São Paulo. In the quest for peace, a park and some calm, they got together and started producing a pleasant sound; very chill, unworried and happy, showing all there is to enjoy in life. ingredients: 2 very good pals 1 loud and elaborated bass guitar 1 eletric guitar that goes acoustic from time to time 2 spotless vocals.

SODACAFEÉ

Blueboy, Club 8, Harper Lee, in Portuguese? Marcelo, Bruno, Leandro and Diogo, from Brazilian southern city of Blumenau have found the formula to create timeless pop in the vein of old Sarah bands but with a twist: their lyrics are in Portuguese. Their dreamy songs , filled with joyous melodies, amazed us in Plastilina since the moment we first heard them, instantly asking them to be part of our family. SodaCaffé continues the path of other great amazing Brazilian bands as Pale Sunday or Postal Blue, and plan releasing a bright and perfect pop album for the pop world.a bright and perfect pop album for the pop world. LONELY NERDS' SONGBOX

I am writing this lines about my dear friends Lonely Nerd's Songbox but to tell the truth i don't know if they are still going now. Débora Salomão joined us on Último Volume in 2000 and in that time she got into the really brazilian indie scene. In the same 2000's, i remember DW, Panke and their friends every thuesdays were on studio of the radio to see us record the radio show. It closed up us like a friends and an "indiegang" in downtown Curitiba was forming. After that they are in the music alternative scene starting and breaking bands projects but always doing good music. I am a Lonely Nerd's Songbox fan more than they imagine. Listen their songs before they decide break up again....

WRY

Wry are a perfect mix between punk and shoegaze. Live they remind The Who and the songs are influenced by Sonic Youth, The Wedding Present, My Bloody Valentine and early U2 wrapped by their unique sound. They released 2 albums in Brazil, their debut Direct (Holiday Records 1998) and Heart-Experience (Monstro Records 2001) gained great reviews in the Brazilian media. Two videos were shot: Red Shoes and Jesus Beggar in 2001 which were played regularly on MTV Brazil. After the Brazilian Goo Goo Meginee Tour 2001 and I Love And Hate You Brazil Tour 2002 they flew out to London and have based themselves there for the foreseeable future.
Wry have played with many International bands on Brazilian tours such as Man Or Astroman?, Superchunk and Make Up. In the UK they have recently played with The Subways, The Cribs, The Parkinsons, The Rakes and Houston 500 and are well respected by all.

NATIONAL

In the world of arts, it is always difficult to find the limit between genius and pure madness. The duo National brings the better of the two worlds: their music is impressive for its geniality and complexity and the concepts behind it are on the verge of insanity.
They work with homemade sound experimentation, using synthesizers and keyboards, sequencers, guitars, voice effects, computers and samplers to produce eclectic and unclassified music. They are extremely eccentric and they make everything in their own devices, from the recordings to the manufacture of the CDs and artwork. They had done ambient music, porn soundtracks, parodies, dance and traditional electronica, downtempo, breakbeat, braindance and idm, always conceptual. In 2001 came a single in floppy-disk, followed by the albums Disket-Delay and Insônia. Insônia used sleep as subject and Disket-Delay bet in the extreme ambience.
In early 2002 the duo came back with 9 CDs at once. They were records as the brilliant tribute to John Cage’s 4’33’’, the bizarre Sampler Virus 1 and 2, the compilation of forbidden songs Plunderphonics All-Stars, one record totally devoted to the ideas of the philosopher Pierre Lévy and others as Música para Mulheres Mutantes, C+A, Cinco and CD. CASSIM

I am introducing to my readers my old friend Cassiano Fagundes currently knowed like Cassim. He played in a smart band called Magog in the 90's. I remember the Magog's show at 92 Degrees, (the Curitiba answer to CBGBs in NY) playing their "art/surf/rock" never imitated for other bands in southern Brazil. Meanwhile Cassim, or Cassiano turned an easy rider traveling by bus all south american trying news landscapes in Argentine, Chile, Bolivia and others wild countries. Also he lived in USA forming with american friends a band named The Soundscapes. The following realease is copied of his site. Cassim, see you in the other side. (Neri)

Cassim was born in Curitiba, south Brazil. His first venture in music was the garage outfit Magog, which had local hits during the early nineties and was praised by producer of Nirvana fame Jack Endino in an interview for the Brazilian music magazine Bizz. Citing The Birthday Party and Blue Cheer as influences, the band released singles by their own and had some of their songs included in Brazilian alternative rock compilations, Magog disbanded in 1996.In 1998, Cassim left to New York, USA, where he worked for Brazilian newspapers as an international correspondent and writer. During the next four years, he would write songs thoroughly, influenced by his research on American and Irish folk music as well as on his diet of an almost daily gig-going in the city that never sleeps. The result was a collection of songs that would be recorded and played with his new band - the alt. folk rock group Bad Folks - upon his return to Curitiba. Cassim shares the Bad Folks’ songwriting with two other members - Caio Marques and Andre Scheinkmann. They released a single, two EPs, and are currently doing pre-production for the band’s first album. Bad Folks are well known in the Brazilian indie scene, mostly for their distinctive sound and memorable live performances. In late 2005, Cassim started writing songs for a solo project, influenced by bands like Faust, American soul artists, The Flaming Lips, XTC and his travels in Brazil and elsewhere. Sometime later, he recorded five songs at home using the Garage Band software and its Motown drumming loops. Cassim intended the recordings to be a demo that could guide him through future productions. But as he realized he had created good and original music, regardless of the lo fi limitations of the technology available, he decided to put those recordings in his MySpace page. The response to the songs was surprisingly positive, and thus, as someone put it, Subtropicalia Rock was invented. Songs such as “This Place Called Feeling”, “Maelsrom SOS” and “That Old Spell” are interesting pieces that blend soulful rhythms with noisy guitars and freaky ambiences, while "Why Do You Cry Every Morning" testifies Cassim' s folk and alt. country rock background. This set of songs also includes "A Minute Ago", which suggests what the Subtropicalia Rock would be, with its gothic latin soundscapes and shoegazing guitar riffs. Cassim is currently rehearsing with his backing band, for he wants to travel with it to introduce his music to the world. If he does so, and I believe he will very soon, you should check him out. After all, Cassim is an artist you don’t meet everyday.

P.O.S.T

P.O.S.T is about to release its first CD. Eclectic, flirting with rock'n'roll and experimentation, the 11-track album finds inspiration in such different sources as My Bloody Valentine, Mogwai, Nick Drake, Pink Floyd and Astor Piazzola. Here, waltz and electronica find their own places. It's the result of two years of a labor of love, which comes to show the band's guts and determination.
The group's goal is to "wake up" its listeners to the infinite possibilities of music. P.O.S.T stands for "Power On Self Test -- the set of tests a computer performs while it's starting up. And, like a computer scanning the terrain before booting, the band continues its musical explorations in order to wake up to new horizons.

CONSTANZA

If somebody invite Roberto Carlos, The Cure, Bloc Party and Jorge Ben to make a jam session playing and singing in the same time it probably would be Constanza. They funny music is great. Claudinha, Rafael, Guto and DW are into this project that will shake the Curitiba pop-rock scene that needs something like that. If you are in bad humour don't try them.

LAVOURA ELETRO

Lavoura Eletro is a hybrid Brazilian musical group that turns on through the fusion of electronic, jazz, brazilian music and african futurism. Since the late 1990s, musician and producer TRZ, together with the bass player Fabiano (DJ IB) and Paulo Pires, played in a popular local Sao Paulo band called Mercado de Peixe. But while the three of them were living in Bauru, they created a side project of pro-groove beats named Musikalikida. In 2003, DJ IB and TRZ started a new project called Lavoura Eletro, a reference to a novel by author Raduan Nassar Lavoura Arcaica. Using samples and remixing genres like samba, house, dub, hip hop, afro beat, IDM, Brazilian Popular Music (MPB) and drumnbass their performances became quite popular, playing raves and clubs all over the Sao Paulo State.

PALE SUNDAY

Brazil enters the pop race with Pale Sunday, a lovely little jingle-jangle pop group. Their singer has this lovely, affecting voice, made even more saucy by his accent! At times, they sound like a South American Lucksmiths, which, believe me, couldn't possibly be a bad thing! "A Weekend With Jane" kicks off the single, and oooooh, it's dreamy! "Go Ahead" is a bit more rockin', though "Today" slows things down and gets a little more romantic. "The Girl With Sunny Smile" ends with a P!o!p!, and I'm enthralled and, once again, left eager for their next record! Hurry hurry, Jimmy Matinée! Single Of The Week. --Mundane Sounds

POSTAL BLUE

Postal Blue from Brasilia, aims to create a general mood of aimless, beautiful depression by combining the dreamy gauze of shoegazer music with the airy beauty of their home country's bossa nova. This results in an intoxicating combination of genres that generally eschews the concise pop format. The individual tracks are less songs than explorations of mood and tonal color, even Ribeiro's breathy, gender-ambiguous vocals (think Astrud Gilberto meets Morrissey) act as just another layer in a tangled concoction of sound where it is even impossible to separate what sounds are coming from acoustic guitars and what sounds are being made by electric ones.

THE TAMBORINES

The Tamborines is living in London now but they originally are from Maringa, south of Brazil and I understand why they left Brazil. In UK they are showing their music, make good shows, know other excellent bands and much, much, much more GOOD places to play. Henrique told me once a time that there are brilliant brazilian bands living in the wrong country. Now I can understand his words. Their influences are basically 60´s psychodelic rock but in my opinion they reminded a lot Teenage Fanclub. I don´t know why!

OLD MAGIC PALLAS

Five friends from Sao Paulo, Brazil, decide to play and form a band after they realize a common interest in the bands from the 60s (Love and The Byrds) and 90s british guitar bands (My Bloody Valentine, Blur, Ride, Slowdive, etc...). After many rehearsals the first songs were conjured up and in July 1994 the current line-up was cemented. The band went to studio in order to record their first demo tape entitled Pull My Daisy featuring six tracks.Support and many compliments encouraged Old Magic Pallas to start shooting a video-clip that had its first appearance on MTV in September 1995 on a program named Lado B (the brazilian version of 120 minutes). Then they had six of their songs included in a compilation called Old Moon Whale on Artifact Records and are currently working on their first album to be released soon.Guitars that fuse psychedelia, noise and pop melodies, a full-throated resonant bass, drums tailor made for the band's acidic dimension and Chris' voice, a ticket to heaven, that has touched everyone who listened to the shattering sounds of Old Magic Pallas.

GRENADE

In the early 90´s when Rodrigo Cesar broken up with his first band Killing Chainsaw he married and moved to Londrina, Pr, south of Brazil and in 98 start a one man band named GRENADE. Made home records he put out some projects in Brazil with label and distributor in USA like Dukeweed Records from Seattle. Well, the time flies and Rodrigo decided to return with a four piece band because Grenade was getting more famous in the alternative brazilian scene playing in São Paulo, Curitiba, Rio de Janeiro, Goiânia, Maringá...Today they are a reference like a brazilian band invited to play in a big event called TIM Festival 2004 (i bet you know this trade mark) on stage in the same day with Libertines, Strokes, The Mars Volta. I remember brazilian people asking for theirself who are this band? They are from NY or London? Before this they had been playing with Pixies and Nada Surf.
The Grenade latest record released by SLAG RECORDS has an excellent job of Steve Fallone (Luna, Strokes, Sonic Youth) and was record in Londrina and remasterizated in NY.

OS TELEPATAS

Os Telepatas are a great surprise in the new brazilian alternative rock scene for me. I met them when I was working in São Paulo and Ana Carol (ex-Fabs girlfriend) that plays in the band gave me they first single "Coração Pedra De Gelo" released in 2005. Marco Stecz loved it and fastly we played them on Ultimo Volume. They sounds like Mogwai meeting Ride but it is not enough to define their music. You need listen to believe - they are so professional like uk or new american bands - but hate marketing or any type of merchandising for promotion. Their new single "Vegas Special" is out now in May, 2006. You can listen them at My Space or Trama Virtual.

I have been listening this brazilian four pieces based in Curitiba. In 2000 Xanda Lemos that today is singer and guitarrist of Criaturas played in a excellent band named Wasted. Our radio show Ultimo Volume did a interview with them at Educativa FM our old radio station before we decided move to Lumen FM.
